LANGUAGE ARTS

Language Arts will include a reading program and a language program. The reading program is divided into two areas, independent reading and a skills based literature program using the Prentice Hall Literature series. We will be reading a variety of stories and novels as a class in order to build comprehension. Language arts skills include spelling, grammar, vocabulary development and various types of writing using Step Up to Writing and Six Traits curriculum. Although there will be spelling tests, evaluation will be based upon the correct use of words in writing final drafts of papers as well. Creative writing, poetry and journal writing are part of an ongoing process in class.

SOCIAL STUDIES

This is a multifaceted program which includes the integration of several areas. Our history program emphasizes ancient history and cultures of the eastern hemisphere. Assignments and activities will include world geography and current events throughout the year. The HistoryAlive! curriculum will emphasize cooperative learning and interactive opportunities. Students take part in dramatizations, creative writing, note-taking, outlining, art projects while integrating learning about ancient civilizations.

In order for all students to have a successful sixth grade year, we have adopted the following team expectations.
  • Be on time for class
  • Treat people with courtesy and respect
  • Follow staff directions and cooperate with others
  • Respect the rights and property of others
  • Come prepared and willing to learn
  • Bring agenda everyday
  • Strive for quality on all assignments

The state Grade Level Expectations for each subject are important to all of us.

We make every effort to provide learning opportunities to help all students in meeting these expectations. Reading expectations such as demonstrating evidence of reading comprehension, using strategies to read fluently, and reading for a variety of purposes are a focus in all subject areas.

Grades reflect student’s achievement, effort, and behavior:

PROGRESS REPORTS

Periodic progress reports will be sent home throughout each quarter to keep both students and parents aware of current progress. It is requested that these be signed by both student and parent and returned promptly.

HOMEWORK

Students should plan for approximately one hour of homework each evening and are expected to turn in work on time.

Plan for 20-30 minutes each day of independent reading in order to establish a habit.

MAKEUP WORK

Assignments and tests missed due to absence must be made up within one week of returning to class. It is the student’s responsibility to find out what was missed, and to make arrangements for completion. Parents can contact the office to receive assignments for absent students.
