SciTech

Is a one semester class for all 6th graders at Washington Middle School. In this class, students acquire computer literacy skills such as:

  • Internet research
    • Copyright rules
    • Search strategies
    • Citation guidelines
  • Electronic communication (e-mail)
  • Multi-media presentations
  • Web page development
  • Managing electronic information
  • Internet safety and appropriate use.
These technology competencies are integrated into the Sixth Grade Science curriculum. Specifically, students learn these skills by completing projects in the content areas of Oceanography and Astronomy. In addition, students are encouraged to improve their keyboarding accuracy and speed.

The class is designed to operate in a cooperative learning environment. The four Ts: thinking, teamwork, tolerance, and technology are emphasized. In this setting, problem solving, leadership, and communication are reinforced.

Grades are determined by class participation, daily work, and larger projects. By the end of the semester, students should be prepared to utilize technology independently to improve their learning in the 7th and 8th grades.
