Leadership Class

Our Mission:

Leadership is an elective that consists of a group of students that are together an hour a day to identify, discuss, and work on aspects in our school and community that could use improvement. We talk about issues that may occur, and ideas on new things that we think could benefit Washington Middle School (WMS). All fund raising, extra activities, and any community drives that our school participates in are created and carried out by the leadership class. These students are leaders in the school and are expected to create good influences, and leave behind positive marks at WMS.

Current Events

Outdoor Classroom-

The outdoor classroom is an area between the sixth and seventh grade halls. The area is going to be used for science classes to observe the plants and learn about nature, art for inspiration and also to learn about nature and be able to capture it in their artwork or even just for a calm surrounding, all teachers that want to go outdoors for their classroom learning experience, and even for the community who walks on the paths of WMS or parents and guests to come to watch a soccer game or for any outdoor activities at WMS . Leadership is helping to choose plant and layout design. We have gone on a field trip to The San Fransisco Street Bakery to observe the newly created garden area for inspiration and ideas. We have come up with a list of plants and are in the process of finding information on the different plants to see how they would do in our climate and classroom area. Mrs. Ruth, mother of Nelson Ruth, has been our guide through out our advancement in the planning process. She has shown us different designs, plants, and how to get started on creating our outdoor garden. Not to mention all of the other adults who have been helping the whole way through.

More recently, the class and any other students who volunteered have planted most of the plants that we ordered and were given to us. We took time from our weekends to come out and dig, plant, separate and mulch the areas. The garden has transformed so much in the past two weeks and it is close to being finished. Everyone helped greatly and we thank all of you who came out to make our garden one step closer to an outdoor classroom.

Recycling Efforts and Reducing Waste-

Leadership class has been making a huge effort and spending lots of time talking about and doing different things to help make WMS a greener school. We have added recycle bins that students may put empty bottles in. We also have a large counter in our cafeteria that has separate bins that are there for cans, milk cartons, bottles, and a sink that you may pour your milk in if not finished. Recycle posters have been put up all around the school and recycling education is starting to be taught to students. We are working very hard to make sure students are aware of the issues and know about all the actions we as a school can take to make the world a better place starting with Washington Middle School.

School Water Bottles-

This is a plan that a few of the leadership members have come up with to reduce the waste at WMS. They have figured out how much we waste at our school daily and world-wide. Most of the waste is made up of common plastics. They have decided that we could purchase reusable bike bottles made out of recycled plastic. We have ordered about 200 bottles with a WMS logo designed by a student in the leadership class. We will receive them over the next couple of weeks. They will be sold in the student store for five dollars each. This is supposed to help stop the buying and wasting of plastic at our school.

This is a cool video that we watched in leadership breaking down the process of "stuff".

Valentine's Day-

WMS has not celebrated Valentine's as a school in a long time. So what we are doing is a small "lollipop gram". A few days before Feb. 14th we are going to be opening booths at lunch and we will be selling valentines(or grams) for 25 cents each. You can write the name of the recipient and a short message on each one. This will be attached to a lollipop that will be given to the student. Every student will receive a lollipop and all the messages that were made out to them.

Plans in Progress

Activity Night-

As you may know WMS has activity afternoons (dances). Before they were at night on Fridays. Now they take place right after school. Most of the students at WMS were unhappy about the new idea and wanted to know why they changed the time of the dances. Parks and Recreation funds out activity nights and all WMS does is provide the place. Since we have ASB funds, two ASB officers found out how to put on our own dances. They have come up with the prices and date. We will be holding the dance on May 2, 2008. The price will be $5 entry and a can of food. We will have pizza and water, dancing, and other activities. We figure that in the process, WMS will end up profiting from the dance.

WMS Blog-

Students in leadership class have come up with the idea to open a new WMS blog on the WMS website. We are hoping that this will be a forum where students can chat about school related issues. We are working on getting a filter for it so that the blog can not be used inappropriately. Kevin Hoonan is helping us with getting started. This will be the project of a group of the leadership students for the next couple of weeks and we will be notifying the students about the site as soon as we get it started up. We will informing them of the rules, uses and consequences if they do not follow the rules.

Prior Sucesses

Respect Assembly(MLK Assembly) -

The leadership class a few weeks ago presented an assembly disscusing Martin Luther King and the bullying that is going on in our school. We talked to each 5th period class and asked them to write a bullying experience that they have witnessed themselves. Whether they were the bully, the victim, or even a bystander. We took them and found ones that we thought had a strong message to get across. At the assembly, we read them anonymously out loud to each grade separatly. Then the teen council made a presentation talking about how we can change situations we can get in.
