September 5, 2007 DUE DATE: September 12, 2007
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Students,
Welcome to Washington Middle School! This will be a very exciting year as students meet new friends and teachers, and learn their way around a different school. For most students, seventh grade will start out with some confusion, but after a few days the new routine will seem very normal.
My goal as a teacher is to improve the reading, writing, and thinking skills of every student in my Language Arts/Social Studies classes. Washington Middle School is dedicated to helping students be successful, and I hope your child will take advantage of the many opportunities that are offered here.
Expectations: All students are expected to: be on time, do their best, show respect, be prepared with all materials (including any homework or make-up work) needed for class. Students are also expected to follow all rules and policies in the WMS Agenda.
Absences: Your child will need to make up class work following an absence, even if the absence is excused. The general rule is one day of absence equals one day to make up the work, two days of absence equals two days to make up the work, and so on. Students can see me before school to get the work that was missed and to schedule a time to make-up any tests. All assignments are posted in a binder in the classroom so that returning students can easily locate what needs to be done. Students must make special arrangements with me to make up tests and quizzes following an absence. For an absence of three or more days, parents may request class work from the office. In this instance, assignments are due when the student returns to class.
Homework: Reading at home is required every day. Students need to read at home at least thirty minutes every day. Book reports are required throughout the year. Guidelines and due dates for these assignments will be sent home with your child at the beginning of each quarter.
If you feel your child is having difficulty in class at any time please contact me right away. I truly want to help prepare your child and encourage their academic success. Please be sure to call me before or after school if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Katie Higgins
