Students will continue to develop new skills and review old skills. We will work on developing skills in vocabulary, comprehension, decoding, and many others. We will use novels and short stories to develop these skills. Lessons are aligned to the Grade Level Expectations and are also developed to match the goals and objectives written in the spring at the IEP meeting for your child.

Students will read independently each day, so they will always need a book. We will complete one book report each quarter. I will read aloud to the class daily for about fifteen minutes from a novel of my choice. More than anything, I want reading to become an enjoyable leisure activity that will stay with the students throughout their lives.

If students use their time well in class They should not have a great deal of homework each night. Each Monday there will be an assignment listed in the agenda which will be due on Friday. These assignments are intended to review and master skills previously taught. Best practice would be to work a bit each night rather than save all of the assignment for Thursday evening. Students should also read each night. They love reading when an adult is reading as well. Fifteen minutes or so a night would help increase fluency and comprehension. They can read whatever they enjoy the most; books, comics, TV guide, newspapers, magazines, or letters from friends. It would be great if one time a week an adult could find the time to listen to them read and talk with them about what was read. It is amazing how quickly skills improve with this added to their evening responsibilities.

To be up to date on nightly assignments, please look in the agenda. In my class, students fill agendas in every day, and an adult will sign them.

Thank you for your help and support.
